Shoreside’s Annual Report on the Implementation of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Policy and the Local Offer 2015-2016
Prepared and written by Andrea Monahan SENDCo
Policies
The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Policy was reviewed at the end of the academic year 2015-2016 and is available on the school website. The SENDCo is Andrea Monahan, who took over the role this year following and is a fulltime member of teaching staff.
The named governor responsible for special educational needs and disability is Nicky Earl. The SENDCo and SEND governor met twice during the school year to:
review the SEND action plan
to discuss the planned implementation of the Speech and Language Pathway
to analyse school data relevant to pupils with SEND
to review the Speech and Language Pathway resources and training.
Total number of pupils with SEND: 17
The number of pupils on role at Shoreside is 206. This gives an average of 8.3% of pupils with SEND.
Due to pupils leaving and joining the school mid-year and pupils being added to the SEND register the total number of pupils with SEND fluctuated between 15 and 17. For the purposes of this report I have included all the pupils that at some point have had SEND. The number of children with SEND in July 2016 is 16.
The main category of SEND for these 17 pupils are:
Communication and Interaction (CI) |
Cognition and Learning (CL) |
3 |
10 |
Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMHD) |
Sensory and/or Physical needs (SP) |
3 |
1 |
The overall categories of SEND for these 17 pupils are:

Cognition and Learning (CL) |
13 |
10 |
Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMHD) |
Sensory and/or Physical Needs (SP) |

All pupils and parents are involved in the setting of Pupil Provision Plans each term.

Children in Shoreside are assessed against the relevant year group expectations. During the spring term, both Year 2 and Year 6 undertake external testing. Any pupils with SEND that are working to a previous year groups’ expectations are monitored and assessed using B-Squared resources.
Attendance of all pupils is monitored closely, this also being the case of pupils with SEND.
Exclusions
There were no exclusions of any pupils in the school year 2015-2016.
Deployment of staff and resources
The following staff are deployed to support pupils with SEND at Shoreside Primary School:
Seven teaching assistants who offer learning support in the classroom, two teaching assistants offering 1:1 support and some pupils with SEND also have some of their needs met through Pupil Premium sessions.
External Agencies
During this school year the following external agencies were involved with Shoreside Primary School in supporting pupils, training staff, offering advice or meeting with parents. Educational Psychologist, Inclusion Consultant, SEND teacher, Hearing Impairment Services, Visual Impairment Services, Speech and Language Therapy Services, School Nurse and Social Services.
Staff Training and CPD
This year, teaching and support staff received training during INSET days and staff meetings. The school’s Inclusion Consultant provided training sessions on inclusion and effective deployment of teaching assistants. Occupational Therapy Services provided training on sensory perception and supporting pupils with physical needs. Specialists from Speech and Language Therapy Services (SALT) provided training in diagnosing pupils with speech and language difficulties. SALT also provided training sessions for using the new materials for the Speech and Language Pathway. This pathway is a whole school approach launched during the spring term in order to go live during the summer term. This pathway of programmes will continue into the next school year, monitored by the SENDCo and reviewed by the senior leadership team in July 2017.
The SENDCo attended the NASEN conference in Leeds this year to receive the very latest information on many issues surrounding practice and procedure regarding SEND. The SENDCo has taken part in SEND cluster meetings and training sessions to enable stronger networks and to continue professional development. The SENDCo has enrolled on and successfully completed the first half of the National Award for SEND at Edgehill University.
