At Shoreside, we operate a prefect system - a role for which all Y6 children are eligible to apply.
Shoreside Primary School
Prefect Job Description
The Role of Prefect
As part of our citizenship education, we believe that children need to experience duties and responsibilities that come with being a member of a community in order to help them prepare to play an active role as citizens.
At Shoreside Primary School, we believe that prefects have a very important role to play in the day to day organisation of our school. Only Year Six pupils are allowed to apply for this position, reflecting their relative maturity and influence. The position not only allows the Year Six pupils to lead by example and demonstrate their responsibility, it also enables the younger children to learn from a good example.
Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities include:-
• Ensuring that children line up quietly, sensible and safely at the end of lunchtime and
breaktimes;
• Working with classes during wet break times;
• Monitoring corridors and other areas to promote pupil safety and security;
• Working alongside teachers to promote positive behaviour.
Not all prefects will carry out all roles, but will work according to agreed rotas and within an overall school plan.
Accountability
Prefects are directly responsible to the Deputy Headteacher. They will also work under the guidance of school staff, responsible for particular areas (Teachers, TA’s, Lunchtime Supervisors and so on). Prefects are not directly responsible for pupil behaviour, safety or security.
Prefects are expected to:
Be punctual for duties, keep to plans and rotas and attend all prefect meetings where possible.
Be good role models, keeping school rules and exercising common sense and sensitivity when dealing with other children.
Be positive and enthusiastic , encouraging and motivating fellow students.
Be cooperative, helpful, well-mannered, trustworthy, kind and responsible
Be respectful toward teachers, their peers, and the school environment.
Treat other fairly, without showing favour to friends or siblings.
